Solvay to Begin Mineville Site Demolition

Ore-processing site started operations in 1943

Moriah, NY, February 13, 2023 - 8:00 EST

Solvay plans to begin demolition work at the closed Mineville #7 ore-processing mill in March as part of a safety program for the site. The project is scheduled to be completed in November.

Solvay awarded a contract to Sabre Demolition to commence the work, and Environmental Resource Management (ERM) will manage the project. Rhodia purchased the site in 1986 and Solvay bought Rhodia in 2011. The demolition work will be conducted in compliance with New York State historic preservation requirements and state safety regulations.

As part of the project, Solvay is proud to be partnering with the Iron Center Museum and the Sherman Free Library to help further their important efforts. The historic value of Mineville’s industry should be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

The mill, which has employed hundreds of workers over the years, ceased operations in 1980. A book entitled “Through the Light Hole” by Patrick Farrell documents the long and rich history of the iron-ore mining and processing industry in the area and discusses the #7 mill.
