Tentative Assessment Roll on File

Notice is hereby given that the Assessors of the Town of Moriah, County of Essex have completed the Tentative Assessment Roll for the current year and that a copy has been left with the Town Clerk at Moriah Town Hall where it may be seen and examined by any interested person until the fourth Tuesday in May.

The Assessors will be in attendance at 4303 Main Street (former Village Hall), Port Henry, NY with the Tentative Assessment Roll on the following days:

                                                           

                                    Saturday, May 2, 2026            10 AM – 2 PM

                                    Tuesday, May 5, 2026             10 AM – 2 PM

                                    Tuesday, May 12, 2026          4 PM – 8 PM

                                    Tuesday, May 19, 2026          10 AM – 2 PM

 

The Board of Assessment Review will meet on Tuesday, May 26, 2025 between the hours of 4 PM and 8 PM at the Moriah Court House, 42 Park Place, Port Henry, NY 12974, to hear and examine all complaints in relation to assessments, on the formal written application of any person believing him/herself to be aggrieved.  A publication on contesting your assessment in New York State is available at the Town Clerk’s Office or at www.tax.ny.gov .

Full-Time/Part-Time Police Officer

The Town of Moriah is seeking to hire (either) a Full-Time or a combination of Part-Timers to fill the position of Police Officer for the Town of Moriah.  The Town is seeking NY State certified and trained officers ready to immediately fill the role.  This position is a bargaining unit position represented by the Teamsters local unit.  The rate of pay is negotiable based on experience.  The Town offers Health Insurance coverage, Vacation, Personal Leave, Sick Leave and paid Holidays.  Part Timers’ benefits are pro-rated based upon the number of hours worked during the week.

The Full-Time position is within the Civil Service Competitive Class subject to testing and scoring within the top three on the Civil Service Exam.  Part-Time is within the Non-Competitive Class, which is not subject to testing but must meet minimum qualifications to hold the position.

HELP WANTED-ASSISTANT DAY CAMP DIRECTOR

DISTNGUISHNG FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for assisting the director in the administration of a comprehensive recreation program. Employees in this class assist in organizing and directing a recreation program suitable to the interest and needs of a variety of age groups. Work is performed under the general direction of the Camp Director with wide leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgement in carrying out details of the work. Supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate staff. The incumbent does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Assists in directing, planning, and promotion of an athletic and recreation program suitable for a wide range of interests and age groups;

Assists in the supervision, operation and maintenance of the recreation centers and playgrounds;

Confers with the Camp Director or Youth Commission on matters of finance, size and scope of the program;

In assisting the Director, maintains a close working relationship with schools, churches and other recreation-oriented organizations to insure maximum program efficiency;

Periodically reports to the Director or Commission on progress plans for improvement of and problems encountered in the recreation program;

Assists in scheduling paid or volunteer help for supervisors and may personally conduct a recreation program;

May assist with preparation and distribution of publicity and new release material and may speak to civic groups on recreation and athletic matters;

Assists in the purchase and maintains an inventory of recreational supplies and equipment required for the recreation program;

Prepares and submits cost estimates for various programs to the responsible Board or Commission and directs the execution of the approved budget; Prepares a variety of records and reports.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of recreation administration theory and practices; good knowledge of planning and practices relative to acquiring and equipping recreation areas and facilities; good knowledge of the principles and practices of leisure recreation; ability to plan, promote, organize and supervise a comprehensive recreation program; ability to communicate and cooperate with civic organizations and the general public; ability to speak effectively before groups; ability to plan and supervise work of others; ability to write clearly and concisely; sound judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:

(A)       Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree and one season of administration and/or supervision of experience in camping; or

(B)       Be at least 21 years old and one season of administration and/or supervision of experience in camping; or

(C)       Be at least 18 years old and have two seasons of experience as a Camp Counselor; or

(D)       An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a).

NOTE: Season means the annual duration of an organized recreation or athletic program (e.g., summer playground program).

This is a 4-week program; 32 ½ hours per week; $3,167.00 for 4 weeks.

LIFEGUARD

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS. The work involves responsibility for performing routine patrol work looking after the safety and welfare of the bathers at a swimming area. There is, however, considerable responsibility for the exercise of sound judgment in emergencies. An error in judgment might result in loss of life. The incumbent does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES   (Illustrative only)

Stands watch or patrols bathing beach keeping bathers within bounds and going to their aid when they are in difficulty; Applies resuscitation techniques and otherwise renders first aid;

Instructs beginners in swimming;

Keeps the beach free of glass and other debris;

Performs other routine duties such as repairing equipment; Maintains order,

Enforces compliance with beach rules.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIESAND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

A thorough knowledge of first aid, lifesaving and rescue work as applied to accidents in the water; ability to swim well; ability to deal with the public and to secure cooperation without unnecessary antagonism; ability to keep records and to make simple reports and arithmetic computations; good observation; mental alertness; good moral character; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be at least 17 years old.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OFAPPUCA TION:

Possession of a current American Red Cross basic life support for the professional rescuer CPR, or equivalent combination; and possession of a current lifeguard training certificate from a certifying agency (such as the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts, YMCA) acceptable to the State Health Commissioner.

This is a 35 Hour per week position of scheduled hours, and weekends will be required.  Rate of pay is $18.50 per hour.

NOTICE OF TEMPORARY CLOSING OF ROADS

IN THE TOWN OF MORIAH

Notice is hereby given pursuant to Article 41 Section 1660 of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law that any vehicle with a gross weight of more than six (6) tons shall be temporarily excluded on the Town of Moriah Town roads.  Such exclusions shall take effect until further notice.  This is a necessary precaution to prevent damage to town roads during the spring thaw.

Important Notice!

The USPS has made changes on how postmarks are applied, and this may affect Town of Moriah property tax payments and water & sewer payments mailed close to a deadline.

Post marks were previously done at your local post office, now under new USPS guidelines the date may reflect the day it is processed at a regional sorting facility which could be several days later.

  • A payment mailed on time may receive a later postmark through no fault of the sender.
  •  Late postmarks could result in penalties or interest, even if you mailed your payment by the due date.

 Ways to avoid this:

  • Mail payments earlier than the deadline. 
  • Request a manual postmark at the counter the day you mail in your payment. 
  • Consider paying in person.

TAX COLLECTOR’S NOTICE

I, Rose M. French, the undersigned Collector of Taxes in and for the Town of Moriah, Essex County, New York have received the Tax Roll and Warrant for the collection of taxes for the year 2026.

I will sit at the following named place for the purpose of receiving taxes, from 8AM to 4 PM on the following dates without a penalty:  January 2, 2026 through January 31, 2026, Monday through Friday at the Town of Moriah Town Hall, 38 Park Place Suite 2, Port Henry, NY 12974.

As of February 1, 2026, one (1) percent penalty will be added, two (2) percent penalty added as of March 1, 2026 and three (3) percent penalty added as of April 1, 2026 until the return of unpaid taxes on May 1, 2026 is made to the County Treasurer pursuant to law.

You will be offered the opportunity to pay your taxes in four installments, but you must choose to do so by January 31st.  Instructions will be included in with your taxes.

Water & Sewer Billing Reminder!

The Town of Moriah Water & Sewer Clerk Rose M. French will be collecting Water and Sewer rents beginning January 2, 2026.  Billing and due dates are as follows: 

Bill January 1st for January, February and March; Due February 3rd

Bill April 1st for April, May and June; Due May 3rd

Bill July 1st for July, August and September; Due August 3rd

Bill October 1st for October, November and December; Due November 3rd

All rents will be collected through November 3, 2026 (NO PAYMENTS WILL BE ACCPETED AFTER THIS DATE), after which any unpaid balance will be levied on to the Town & County taxes which come out in January 2027.

PLEASE REMIT BOTTOM PORTION OF INVOICE WHEN PAYING YOUR BILL TO ENSURE CREDIT TO THE PROPER ACCOUNT AND BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR TELEPHONE NUMBER.

Did you know?

New York State Agriculture and Market Law requires all dogs older than 4 months to be licensed within the Town they reside.

Licensing ensures that all dogs have been properly vaccinated against rabies for the protection of both you and your neighbors.

Also, licensing your dog ensures a safe return to you if lost.

If your dog is spayed or neutered the fee is just $6.00!  Otherwise, it is $13.00.

It can also be done through the mail if you send in proof of rabies vaccination and proof if your pet has been spayed or neutered to the Town Clerk at 38 Park Place, Port Henry, NY  12974 with check or money order made payable to the Town of Moriah for $6.00 or $13.00; whichever is applicable.

Once your dog is licensed it will need to be renewed yearly; a reminder will be mailed to you in the month you licensed your dog.

Highway Department-Heavy Equipment Operator

The Town of Moriah Highway Department seeks applications for the full time position of Heavy Equipment Operator.  Applicant must possess a valid New York State Class B CDL License or Permit at the time of appointment. 

Job specifications detailing the minimum qualifications are available by calling Highway Superintendent, Jamie Wilson at 518-942-7155. 

Successful applicant must pass a pre-employment physical which includes mandatory drug testing and the position remains subject to the Town of Moriah’s random drug testing policy during the course of employment.

Town Board Meeting’s – Week Day Change

The Town of Moriah Town Board will hold their regular monthly board meetings on the 3rd Thursday of every month instead of the 2nd Thursday of every month due to a scheduling conflict.  They will be held at the Town of Moriah Court House, 42 Park Place, Port Henry, NY at 6:00pm.  The public is welcome to attend.

 

Effective immediately the Town will no longer be charging for the disposal of elctronic waste at the Transfer Station.  The Town will still accept electronic waste as per DEC regulations but the manufacturer is now responsible for any associated recycling costs.
