About Peter Shrope:

"My Adirondack Rockware is made from the mountains. My handcrafted pottery is glazed with original recipes that are made with 100% pure crushed Adirondack rock. I researched the geology of the Northern Adirondacks, tested rock samples and these unique glazes are the result of this experimentation.

The idea behind the work grew out of my long time interest in thinking locally and responding to my immediate environment. Prior to living in the Adirondacks I mined and processed red clay from my backyard in Maryland for a “Baltimore Redware” series of work. In the 1970's I built a two chambered wood fired kiln in New Hampshire fueled with waste slab wood from local sawmills. Over the years my work has been in many national and regional exhibitions.

My involvement in the arts began in 1974, studying and apprenticing under American Master Potters Vivika and Otto Heino. I later taught at New England College and Rivier College both in New Hampshire. I received my M.F.A. degree in Sculpture from Penn State. During that time I explored ideas and materials outside of the ceramic field. Working at the Penn State Museum of Art during my studies added influences and broadened my expressive viewpoint.

My experience as a Museum Exhibit Designer includes work for the Brooklyn Children's Museum, The Maryland Science Center in Baltimore, The National Zoo in Washington, D.C.,
The Wild Center, SUNY Potsdam, The Saranac Lake Free Library, The Oil Heritage Region in Northwest PA, and many traveling exhibits."
