Race and Real Estate: Beyond Timbuctoo

The Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society is pleased to announce the first 2020 Winter Lecture, "Race and Real Estate: Beyond Timbuctoo " presented by Amy Godine. The program will be held at the Four Seasons Room at the Golden Arrow 2559 Main Street, January 15 at 7 p.m., no admission charge.

"Race and Real Estate: Beyond Timbuctoo"

The fall-out from radical abolitionist Gerrit Smith's land giveaway long outlived the settlement near John Brown's home. Godine explores the strange case of Stephen Pembroke, to whom Smith gave a lakefront deed in Lake Placid while Pembroke was a slave, and traces what happened to that land and to Pembroke's sons, sharecroppers in Alabama, when their Adirondack patrimony was disputed in New York courts.
