THS presents: 2022 Exploring Our Regional Heritage Programs

The Ticonderoga Historical Society presents its 2022 Program: Exploring Our Regional Heritage

Unless otherwise noted, all events are held outdoors (under a tent) at the Hancock House Museum and are free to attend, although donations are encouraged. Reservations are encouraged, as space is limited. Please bring your own lawn chair. Program dates and times are subject to change. All social-distancing guidelines will be enforced. Changes are posted to Facebook and on the tihistory.org website whenever possible.

Schedule of Events:

June, 24, 7:00 pm- The Last Days of John Brown

Few figures in American History are as controversial as the abolitionist John Brown, who briefly called the Adirondacks home. Speaker John Warren, founder and editor of the New York Almanack, has studied and written extensively on Brown’s life and impact. A provocative and thoughtful program, to be sure.

July 7, 7:00 pm-The Traitor Who Saved Ticonderoga: Benedict Arnold at the Battle of Valcour Island

As an overwhelming British force headed south from Canada in 1776, Arnold assembled a ragtag fleet to meet it in a desperate naval action. Though defeated, his heroics gave our infant nation a year to breathe & win the pivotal victory of Saratoga the following year. Our speaker is former history professor and NCCC Library Director Brian O’Connor.

July 15, 7:00 pm-The North Country at Little Big Horn

If you think the history of the western U.S. has no impact on the North Country, then this program is for you. Learn about the lives of New York and Vermont men attached to the 7th Cavalry who saw action in one of history’s most infamous battles.

July 22, 7:00 pm- Free Community Concert: Reggie Harris

Reggie Harris is an innovative guitarist, a creative vocalist, and an engaging storyteller whose concert performances are infused with joy. An expert on the music of the Underground Railroad and the Modern Civil Rights Movement, this performance is for audiences of all ages and will inspire, entertain and inform.

July 28, 2:00 pm- Very Merry Theatre: The Music Man

Bring a lawn chair and join us on the Hancock House lawn for the annual performance of this charming children’s theater group.

August 5, 7:00 pm-Mapping the Adirondacks

Who produced the first detailed map of the Adirondack wilderness, showing most of the water courses, peaks and topography? The answer might surprise, for it was not one of the well-known professionals, but an amateur. Come learn about the life and work of Rochester physician William Watson Ely, whose Map of the New York Wilderness dominated the world of Adirondack maps from the 1860’s until nearly the turn of the century. Presenter Pete Nelson is currently writing a book on early Adirondack surveyors.

August 10, 6:00 pm-Anniversary Celebration

Join us as the Historical Society celebrates 125 years of service to the community. Enjoy wine and cheese in the garden as well as a special program as Town Historian Bill Dolback will present a program of seldom-seen photos of bygone years.

August 19, 7:00 pm- Painting the Forever Wild-Landscape Painters of the Adirondacks

Learn more about the great and lesser known landscape painters of the Adirondacks and how they helped to capture the essence of this wild and beautiful region.

September 9, 7:00 pm- Songs to Keep: The Legacy of Marjorie Lansing Porter

Join us for a fascinating look at a remarkable Adirondack woman, historian and folklorist. An evening of film, music and stories, collected by Marjorie Lansing Porter.

October 21, 7:00 pm- Haunted Hancock 3

Our annual evening of history based ghost stories; a look at the darker side of the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain; and all that goes “bump” in the night!
